The Minor Arcana is the name of the 56 cards of the Tarot deck that correspond to the cards of a modern regular playing deck. Each has four suits of 14 cards: numbers Ace to 10 and the Page, Knight, Queen, and King. The suits of the Minor Arcana are Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles.
The Wands correspond to creativity, action and movement. The phallic symbolism of the wand demonstrates also their correspondence to the yang or masculine principle. They are also associated with the element of fire. Qualities expressed by the cards include
The Cups correspond to emotions and spiritual experiences. They describe inner states, feelings and relationship patterns. The receptive nature of the Cup demonstrates the correspondence to the yin, or feminine principle. They are associated with the element of water. Qualities expressed by the cards include:
The Swords correspond with the intellect, thought and reason and describe situations involving justice, truth and ethical principles. Swords are associated with the element of air.
The Pentacles, also known as the Coins, correspond with practicality, security and materialism. They are associated with the element of earth and represent prosperity and wealth.
The court cards depict personalities that reflect the qualities of their suit and rank.
- King: maturity, masculinity, authority, control and mastery in some area associated with his suit.
- Queen: maturity, femininity, feelings, relationships and self-expression.
- Knight: immaturity, teenagers, swinging wildly from one extreme to another in an attempt to relate successfully to the world; prone to excess, but also eager and sincere.
- Page: playful, a child, pleasure, spontaneity, adventure and possibility.
